山形碧玉

過去=黄泉と夜を司る月の神「月山(がっさん)」、現在=現世利益の太陽の神「羽黒山(はぐろさん)」未来=蘇りの星・宇宙の神「湯殿山(ゆどのさん)」の出羽三山信仰の石。
それぞれの山頂に神が祀られており、三つの山が連なることは仏教においても神聖であるとされています。
縄文時代の石器なども見つかっており、歴史的にも古い地域です。
平安時代には平将門の乱で逃れた平家がこの地をひらいたとされ、この時にちなむ地名が多く残っています。
湯殿山神社は弘法大師空海が建立したと伝えられており、行者で埋め尽くされるほど最盛期には賑わったそうです。
碧玉は、酸化鉄により赤くなりますが、この地の碧玉は他の産地のものと比べ茶色みがかっています。
山形碧玉だけでなく、瑪瑙も産出される銘石の産地です。

A god is enshrined on the summit of each mountain, and the fact that the three mountains are connected is considered sacred in Buddhism. Stone tools from the Jomon period have also been found here, making it a historic region. In the Heian period, it is said that the Taira clan, who fled from the Taira no Masakado Rebellion, founded this area, and many place names related to this time remain until now. Mount Yudono Shrine is said to have been built by Kobo Daishi Kukai, and it was so crowded at its peak that it was filled with ascetics.
