鋸南石

千葉県の地層から採取されるものとしては房州石が有名で、その鉱山のある鋸山は現在採掘も採取することもできません。
その鉱山跡地には、1960年岩肌に彫られた百尺観音と呼ばれる30mの陸海空の交通安全祈願の仏様が祀られています。
この鋸南石は房州石と同じ地層から採取される石で質感が似ていますが、少し地層が若く房州石よりも柔らかく目が細かく感じます。
200万年前の新生代新第三紀鮮新世の地層から採取される銘石です。
200万年前といえば、現在我々が見る事のできる種類の哺乳類の祖先が繁栄した時期で、その後氷河期に入ります。

Boshu stone is famous for being extracted from the stratum of Chiba Prefecture, and Mount Nokogiri, where the mine is located, is currently not open for mining or extraction. At the site of the mine, a 30m tall Buddha called Hyakushaku Kannon, carved from the rock surface in 1960, is enshrined as a buddha of safe travels on land, sea and air. This Kyonan stone is extracted from the same stratum as Boshu stone and has a similar texture, but the stratum is a little younger and it feels softer and finer than Boshu stone. This Japan stone is extracted from stratum of the Pliocene epoch of the Neogene period of the Cenozoic Era, 2 million years ago. 2 million years ago was the time when the ancestors of the mammals we can see today flourished, and then the ice age began.
