常願寺石

富山県常願寺川で産出する石です。
常願寺川は標高3000mもの高さから56kmという短い距離を流れる急流の暴れ川で産出される常願寺の石は転がるうちに玉のような形になるので「常願寺玉石」といわれる、艶のある美しい石です。
140年前の安政の土石流では、400トンもある玉石(大石)が上流から流れてきたとされ、どのくらいの急流の川であるかを物語ります。
名前の由来は諸説ありますが、氾濫する川だったので氾濫しないように「常に願う」意味があります。

This stone is produced in the Joganji River in Toyama Prefecture. The Joganji River is a fast-flowing river that flows from an altitude of 3,000 meters over a short distance of 56 km, and the Joganji stone that is produced there is known as “Joganji Jewels’’ because of their bead-like shape when it rolls. It is a shiny and beautiful stone. In the Ansei debris flow 140 years ago, 400 tons of stones (large rolling stones) are said to have flowed from upstream, which shows how fast the river was flowing. There are various theories about the origin of the name, but since it was a river that flooded, it has the meaning of “to always pray’’ that it would not flood.
