与島石

瀬戸内海に浮かぶ美しい塩飽諸島の与島。
瀬戸大橋で唯一一般の人が上陸できる島です。
天正18年(1590年)の文献によると島々が寄り添いあっていることから「与する島」と名付けられたという説が有力。
かつては採石場があり石材業が盛んでしたが2005年あたりで与島石は採掘されなくなりました。
かつては塩の産地でもあり、縄文時代の石器などもこの島々より出土していることから、古くからすでに日本人が住んでいたとされます。
イサムノグチは香川県高松市にアトリエを設け、庵治石を愛し、多くの作品を残しており、与島石ではイサムノグチの弟子が日本の首相官邸のモニュメントを制作したといわれています。
研究段階ではあるが、新鉱物イットリウムローランド石が含まれている可能性も示唆されています。
