杉と共に、日本を代表する木材で、なかでも奈良県吉野地方の桧は、木曽桧と共にブランド桧で通っています。
奈良時代に書かれた歴史書『日本書紀』には、「杉と楠は舟に、桧は宮殿に、槇は棺に使いなさい」という記述があるそうです。
その言葉通り、古くから桧は城や宮殿、寺社仏閣などの大規模建築物において多く用いれられてきました。
桧の持つ強さや耐久性がその理由です。1300年前に建てられて、今も残る世界最古の木造建築・法隆寺にも、吉野の桧が使われているといわれています。
