熊野本宮大社のある、和歌山県田辺市本宮町本宮でとれる木。
江戸時代に、徳川頼宜が熊野三山の復興を手がけ、身分階級関係なく多くの人々の憧れの地となりました。現在はユネスコの世界遺産「紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道」の構成資産の１つです。
その昔、弘法大師が熊野詣での道中に昼食を食べた時、木の枝を折って箸の代わりにし、食後その枝を土に突き立てたものが成長して現在の２本の杉の大木になったと伝えられている二本杉は本宮町の天然記念物です。
本宮杉は神の御霊が宿るといわれ授与品の木札にも使われています。
Long ago, when Kodo Daishi had lunch on his pilgrimage to Kumano, he broke a tree branch and use it as chopstick.
After his lunch was finished it is said that the branch stuck in the ground grew into the current two large cedar trees that are a natural monument of Hongu Town.
Hongu Cedar is said to be the house the Holy Spirit, and is also used as a wooden tag for gifts.
