高野山壇上伽藍中門檜　明星

◆明星...
高野山開創１２００年記念で建てられた中門に使用されたものと同じ霊木で作られた、数に限りのある一品です。
弘法大師が悟りを開いたときに、口に明星(虚空蔵菩薩の化身)が飛び込んできたそうです。
また、檜の珠が明星と呼ばれる金星のような美しさを持つことから、明星と名付けました。
◆中門...
中門は、金堂の正面手前の一段低い所にそびえる五間二階の楼門です。
高野山開創の折、弘法大師が真っ先に整備に着手したといわれる「壇上伽藍」の入り口に据えられ、長い歴史の中で焼失と再建を繰り返してきました。
天保１４年(１８４３年)の焼失から１７２年ぶりに８代目の再建をし完成しました。
完成した中門は、高野山開創１２００年の記念大法会事業で披露されました。
中門両脇には、大火の折に運び出され、類焼を免れた持国天像と多聞天像の二つの像が、長いときを経て再び祀られています。
◆高野山の「檜」...
高野山では、古来より「杉」「檜」「樅」「栂」「赤松」「高野槙」の６種類の針葉樹を育てています。
寺院建築に使用をするため、伐採を制限しており、これらの樹木を高野六木として大切に保護し、育成、寺院の建築復興に用いています。

It is said that when Kobo Daishi attained enlightenment, the Myojo or (Morning star-Venus- Akasagarbda, one of the eight great bodhisattvas of Buddhism religion) dove into his mouth.
This tree was named Myosei (The reading of Japanese Kanji '明星‘) because of the beauty of this cypress is as beautiful as Venus, which is called Myosei in Japanese.
For the commemoration of the 1200th anniversary for the opening of Mount Koya, the gate burned down on 1843 was rebuilt of the first time in 172 years.
The new Nakamon gate was designed based on the architectural style of the Kamakura period.
It is 25m east-west, 15m north-south and 16m high.
