Kuromatsu (black pine) is the prefectural tree of Shimane Prefecture.
Shimane’s Izumo City is famous for its Izumo Taisha Shrine, but it is also known for Inaba's white rabbits and Kuniyuzuri myths that appear in the Japanese "Kojiki" and "Nihonshoki."
Since ancient times, it has been an important, mysterious place, inseverable from Japanese history.
It is said that Izumo Kuromatsu wood cannot be used as a material until it has passed at least over 100 years of age – the reason being that only the heartwood is used, since the white part of the sapwood is soft and high in water content, which encourages the growth of mold.
This type of wood is very valuable and hard to obtain, because the amount of pulpwood available has radically declined, due to pine weevils and salt water damage.
REIWA
The 22nd National Tree-Planting Festival was held in Shimane Prefecture on April 18, 1971.
It is a black pine tree when Izumo black pine tree was planted with the welcome of Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun.
At the tree-rearing festival in 1991, the Izumo Kuromatsu was pruned by His Imperial Highness Prince Tokuhito
(the throne of the Emperor from May 1, 1991).
Izumo black pine is a tree that grows mainly along the coastline of the San'in region,
and it is also known as a very strong tree because pine fat continues to be produced even after logging.
National tree planting festival
The national tree-planting festival is an important event for the Emperor, which is considered to be one of the "three major events".
At that time, about 15,000 people from inside and outside the prefecture gathered,
and about 10,000 commemorative tree plants were planted by the participants of the ceremony. As many as 9,000 trees were planted.
