神代桂

神代桂は、あまりみかけることがありません。
形がよくシンボルツリーとして植えられることの多い桂の木ですが、カツラは葉の香りに由来し、落葉した葉は甘い香りを発することから、香りが出ることを意味する「香出（かづ）る」が名前の由来といわれています。
桂は長寿の木としても知られていますが、日本最古のものとされる「糸井の大桂（樹齢2000年、幹回り20メートル/兵庫県）」を筆頭に、樹齢数百年から千年以上にもなる古木が、日本各地で天然記念物に指定されています。
新宿御苑の桂の木も皇室庭園となる明治時代よりもさらに昔からあった木のひとつといわれています。

Jindai Katsura is a rare tree that you see rarely.
The katsura tree is often planted as a symbolic tree because of its pleasant shape.
The name "katsura" is said to be derived from the scent of the leaves because the leaves emit a sweet scent after having fallen from the tree.
Katsura is also know as a tree of longevity, it is said to be the oldest tree in Japan.
Tree that are more than 1000 years old are designated as natural monument in various part of Japan.
The katsura tree in Shinjiku Gyoen is said to be one of the tree even older than Meiji era, the period when the Shinjuku Gyoen become an imperial garden.
However there are only a few natural katsura tree and even less Jindai one.
