ハマビシ科の広葉樹のリグナムバイタという樹木です。
世界で最も重い木として有名で、硬く耐久性に優れ、加工面は蝋のような艶があります。
経年変化により濃緑褐色となり、印鑑や数珠、ステッキなどに加工されます。
リグナムバイタとはラテン語で「生命の木」という意味で、ヨーロッパでは樹脂が万病に効く薬として扱われてきました。
It is a broad-leaved tree of the Tribulus family called Lignum vitae.
It is famous as the heaviest tree in the world, and is hard and durable, with a waxy luster when processed. It turns a dark green-brown color over time and is used to make seals, rosaries, walking sticks, and other items. Lignum vitae mean "tree of life" in Latin, and in Europe, its resin has been used as a medicine to cure all kinds of diseases.
