神代椋（むく）

秋田県と山形県の県境にある鳥海山の噴火により土中深く埋められた神代椋。
約2500年前に、鳥海山の山頂付近が馬蹄形状に大きく崩壊した時土中に埋もれ、白身の椋の木が淡い茶色に変色した希少木です。
椋の木自体が非常に少なく古来から良い材は神社仏閣に使用されてきました。
またその雄大な樹形や異形となりがちな幹の様子から天然記念物や御神木とされることも多い木です。

Jindai Muku was buried deep in the ground after the eruption of Mt. Chokai, on the border of Akira and Yamagata prefectures..
It is a very rare tree that was buried in the ground about 2500 years when the area near the summit of Mt. Chokai collapsed in a horseshoe shape and the white color change in a pale brown.
There are very few Muku (oriental elm) and since ancient time those of high quality are been used to build shrines and temples.
In addition, the tree is often designated as a natural monument or a sacred tree, because of its majestic shape and trunk, which tend to be deformed.
