日光杉

日光杉は、現在の日光市、鹿沼市のおおよそ２市にまたがるエリアで生産、産出された杉を指します。
この地域は古くは奈良時代から平安時代初期の人物とされる勝道上人が開いた日光連山、特にそ主峰である男体山を信仰対象とする山岳信仰の盛んな地域でした。
1617年に日光東照宮が建立、そこへ至る３つの街道に植えられたのが、日光杉並木です。
この街道並木の杉は特別天然記念物として保護されています。
今回の日光杉は、日光の地で戦後復興期から育てられた樹齢40年ほどの木です。
建築材料としてだけでなく、杉線香としても、豊富な杉を原料に産業として発達してきました。

Nikko Toshogu Shrine was built in 1617, and Nikko cedar trees were planted along the three roads leading to it. The cedar trees that line this road are protected as a special natural monument.
The Nikko cedar in question is a 40-year-old tree that was grown in Nikko during the post-war reconstruction period.
In addition to being used as a building material, cedar incense has developed as an industry using the abundant cedar as a raw material.
