Arahant (Shimane Prefecture) [Famous Stones of Japan]

ARAHANT

Arahant

A stone that "brings good fortune and invites light."
Tuff is a rock that formed when undersea volcanic ejecta (such as volcanic ash) from approximately 16 million years ago accumulated on the seafloor and turned into rock over a long period of time.
It has been mined since the Muromachi period, and is said to have room temperature and humidity control, sound absorption, and odor absorption effects.
Because it does not slip even when wet, it is known as the "scholarly" stone and the "entertainer's" stone.
It is made from the same stone as the 500 Arhat statues at Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, a World Heritage Site, and is highly valued as a sacred stone.
