Red coral (Tokushima Prefecture) [Famous Japanese Stone]

Red coral

Red coral

Although it is called coral, it is a type of red silica stone mined in Tokushima Prefecture.
This is one of the famous stones unique to the region, where colorful stones such as arknites and solomonites are produced.
There is a beach on Awaji Island where five-colored gravel stones are mined, and it is possible that they are raw stones from the neighboring island of Shikoku that were washed out to sea and became rounded before arriving here.
The beautiful white streaks of quartz on the brown surface are the result of hydrothermal activity and give a sense of the Earth's history.
It is very hard and shines brightly when polished.
