Shikoku Lava (Ehime Prefecture) [Famous Stones of Japan]
SHIKOKU Lava Stone
Shikoku lava
Approximately 14 million years ago, there was a period of frequent eruptions in the Seto Inland Sea, known as the "Setouchi volcanic activity."
This volcanic belt stretches from Aichi to Kyushu, and sanukite and the blackhide garnet (eclogite) found in Ehime are also volcanic minerals that were produced by eruptions during the same period.
Volcanic activity eventually subsided, and there are no volcanoes in Shikoku today.
