Takano Rokki

The power of wood Protection from evil, purification, mysticism

◆ Takano Rokki...
Since ancient times, six types of coniferous trees have been cultivated on Mount Koya: cedar, cypress, fir, Japanese larch, red pine, and Japanese cypress.
Because they are used in temple construction, felling is restricted, and these trees are carefully protected and cultivated as the Takano Rokki, and are used in the reconstruction of temple buildings.
◆The history of Mount Koya...
A sacred place in Japanese Buddhism that was bestowed by Kobo Daishi and opened as a training center for Zen meditation.
Combined with the belief that Mount Koya is the Maitreya Pure Land, it has attracted the faith and respect of the general public, and many people have been visiting the temple for over a thousand years, up to the present day.
Since being registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has been visited by many people from all over the world.

Since ancient time, the six species of coniferous trees at Mt Koya (Hinoki, tsuga, koyamaki, akamatsu, sugi, momi) have been know as "Koya Rikuboku" and their logging has been restricted under the Tomegi system.
Rikuboku is especially important as a building material for temples.
Kodo Daishi Kukai distributed a Rikuboku rosary and embarked on the reconstruction of Mt Koya.
It is said that gather all the six types of wood is extremely difficult.
