An evergreen broadleaf tree of the legume family. Its color ranges from reddish-purple brown to dark brown with a purple tint. Its wood grain is black-purple.
It is also called red wood. The wood is dense, hard, heavy, resistant to humidity, warping, and the effects of climate change.
It grows very slowly, with even fully grown trees only reaching a diameter of about 20cm, and it takes approximately 800 years from planting to being cut down.
Because it is so rare, it is subject to restrictions under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and governments around the world now prohibit its logging.
Mature trees have many knots, so when they are trimmed, the usable part becomes even thinner.
In ancient China, it was prized as a material for furniture exclusively for the royal family and was therefore known as the "Emperor's Wood."
