When trees are attacked by wind, rain, disease or pests, they secrete resin into the damaged area as a defense mechanism, and this accumulated resin becomes the source of the tree's fragrance.
They are dried and the wood is scraped off to be sold as fragrant wood.
Those of particularly high quality are called "kyara" and, because they were so valuable that they were overfished, are now classified as a Type 2 rare species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
The benefits of agarwood include a very strong sedative effect, and recent research has shown that smelling it increases alpha waves and also secretes brain chemicals that bring about a sense of comfort.
