To be precise, it is called Harigiri, and as a wood it is commonly known as Sennoki.
In the Ainu language, it is called "ayusni," which means "ay-us-ni" (thorns, many, tree).
The bark is grey-brown, turning black-brown as the tree ages, and has deep vertical fissures.
It has an overall white color, coarse texture, and straight grain that resembles beautiful zelkova, which is why it is also known as false zelkova.
The wood has been used widely for construction materials, furniture, utensils, sculptures, etc.
The grain remains quite clear in the less aged parts, while the deeper parts have a beautiful tea-colored finish.
