Kamishiro Mura was buried deep underground due to the eruption of Mt. Chokai, which is on the border between Akita and Yamagata prefectures.
Approximately 2,500 years ago, the summit of Mt. Chokai collapsed in a horseshoe shape, and the white-fleshed mulberry tree was buried underground, turning a pale brown, making it a rare tree.
There are very few mulberry trees, and good quality wood has been used for shrines and temples since ancient times.
Furthermore, due to its majestic shape and the unusual appearance of its trunks, it is often designated as a natural monument or sacred tree.
