◇What is the "Koyasan Danjogaran Chumon Hinoki Myojo"?
◆Myojo...
This is a limited edition item made from the same sacred wood as the one used for the inner gate built to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Mount Koya.
It is said that when Kobo Daishi attained enlightenment, a morning star (an incarnation of Kokuzo Bosatsu) flew into his mouth.
The name "Myojo" was chosen because the cypress beads have a beauty similar to that of Venus, also known as the "Myojo."
◆Chumon...
The Chumon Gate is a five-bay, two-story tower gate that stands one level lower just in front of the Kondo Hall.
It was placed at the entrance to the Danjo Garan, which is said to have been the first thing Kobo Daishi started to build when Mount Koya was founded, and has been burned down and rebuilt many times over its long history.
The eighth reconstruction was completed 172 years after it was destroyed by fire in 1843.
The completed inner gate was unveiled at the grand ceremony commemorating the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Mount Koya.
On either side of the middle gate are two statues, Jikokuten and Tamonten, which were carried out during the great fire and escaped the fire, but have been enshrined again after a long time.
◆The "cypress" of Mount Koya...
Since ancient times, six types of coniferous trees have been cultivated at Mount Koya: cedar, cypress, fir, Japanese larch, Japanese red pine, and Japanese cypress.
Because they are used in temple construction, cutting down of these trees is restricted, and these trees are carefully protected, cultivated, and used in the reconstruction of temple buildings as the Takano Rokki.
◇What is the "Koyasan Approach Sacred Tree Cedar Spiritual Jewel"?
・Koyasan Approach The approximately 2km approach to Mount Koya, from Ichinohashi Bridge to Kobo Daishi's mausoleum, is lined with towering, centuries-old cedar trees on both sides. At the base of these trees stand tens of thousands of memorial towers for people from all eras who wished to be as close to the Daishi as possible, proving that Mount Koya is the most sacred place in Japan.
Once you cross the Chozubashi Bridge, it means that you are entering the world of death.
This is because the river that flows here has long been called the Golden River, with gold being a euphemism for death.
This is because it represents the river of death, the Sanzu River.
If you pray at the mausoleum in the back, the Great Master will surely answer.
As a sacred place for those who enter the world of enlightenment, there is still a constant stream of worshippers coming to offer prayers at the mausoleum.
・This is part of a giant cedar tree on the approach to Mount Koya, where the tomb of Reiju Kobo Daishi Kukai is located, and is a precious tree that is difficult to obtain.
This giant tree grew in faith on Japan's most sacred mountain, a sacred place. The jewel, which was created with the thoughts of those who rest there, was named Reiju (Spiritual Jewel).
・The cedars of Mount Koya Mount Koya has been a popular
We have restricted the felling of six types of coniferous trees: cedar, cypress, fir, Japanese larch, red pine, and Japanese cypress.
The approach to the shrine is lined with many magnificent cedar trees over 500 years old, watching over the history of Mount Koya.
◇What is Yakusugi?
Yakusugi refers to the cedar trees that grow naturally on Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture and are over 1,000 years old.
The cedar trees have adapted to the island's geology, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and deer habitat, and secrete six times more antibacterial resin than regular cedar trees. This allows them to grow very slowly depending on the geology, but they also have the ability to grow for a long time.
Because it has excellent antibacterial properties and is durable, it is said to have been used in the construction of the Great Buddha Hall during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
◇What is "Palo Santo"?
Palo Santo is known as the "sacred tree" and has been treasured by shamans since the time of the Inca Empire.
Palo Santo is not only a fragrant wood, but is also one of the most important trees used in traditional natural medicine (ethno-herbal medicine) passed down by indigenous peoples of South America, and is also known as the ``tree that brings good fortune.''
The oil extracted from dried palo santo is said to be effective for calming the mind, inducing sweating, and for rheumatism and headaches, and has been used to relieve symptoms and pain.
◇What is "Sage"?
It has been used for food and medicinal purposes since ancient times, and its scientific name, Salvia, means health, healing, and salvation.
The scent of sage is especially popular among women.
◇What is the "Omuchinotama" (Great Jewel of the Ise Grand Shrine's Miyama Cedar)?
The large cedar tree at the inner shrine of the main shrine of the Imperial Grand Shrine of Ise (Naiku), where the eight mirrors, one of the three sacred treasures, are enshrined.
This is part of what fell during Typhoon Hagibis in 2009.
Ise Grand Shrine consists of the Inner Shrine, which enshrines the great ancestor Amaterasu Omikami, and the Outer Shrine, which enshrines Toyouke Omikami, the guardian deity of food, clothing, and shelter.
The cedar trees that grow in the sacred grounds of the shrine are called "Shingū cedars."
Because trees within the shrine grounds are not permitted to be cut down, only sacred trees of Ise Shrine that have been blown down by wind and are over 300 years old are renamed "Miyama Cedar" and are very rarely sold to the public.
The "muchi" in Oomuchinotama is an honorific title meaning "noble god," and the name means a jewel from a very noble god.
